Q: “What does ‘managing risk’ mean to you?”
A:   “Risk is opportunity, but you have to understand the nature of the risk attached.

“The old-fashioned model of risk management was that you did something afterwards, after something [negative] happened… afterwards people would look at the risk.”

“Modern risk management is about knowing that every risk has a price . . . that’s a very straightforward, very entrepreneurial way of looking at it.”

Q: “You mention the entrepreneurial view of risk. What is that, exactly?”

A: “If you’re an entrepreneur, you have two emotions: your enthusiastic emotion to do the business, [and] on the other hand, your analytical skills that say, ‘Step back and analyse’—more the math side. There’s always that balance.”

Q: “There was a risk involved in taking a position at United. Why did you opt for changing jobs in the volatile economy of 2008?”
A: “I was looking for an environment where I would be able to not only manage risk, but be an active participant…. You can look at risk passively or proactively and see opportunities. I saw the opportunities at United.”
